Our History

After 20 years of working for other firms, Owen Wood began his own business. In 1971, Owen and James Johnson established Johnson & Wood in an old farmhouse in Clio, MI. By 1973, they built a new office in Mt. Morris and moved in the following July. In 1976,Saginaw Owen Wood became the sole owner of the company when James Johnson left the state and moved to Arizona.

Steve Torrey bought Johnson & Wood from Owen Wood in January 1998. In August 1999, he moved the business to Hemphill Road in Burton, where Owen continued working for the company as an estimator for many years. After Steve’s passing in 2018, Jeff Torrey and Jon Clark continued the family legacy as President and Vice President. The company continued to expand by opening offices in Lansing, Saginaw, and Gaylord, and it moved its headquarters to its present location in Flushing in 2023.

Johnson & Wood has focused on building industry relationships, developing talent, and achieving continual growth. The company specializes in educational new construction and retrofits, has added a service department, and is expanding into growing markets such as healthcare, automotive and other industrial arenas. What started in a Clio farmhouse has grown into a proud organization employing hundreds of union workers throughout Michigan.
